Program Description
The McGill University Department of Political Science carries on a long and pioneering tradition in the study of politics in North America. Founded in 1901, the Department's distinguished faculty is actively involved in a wide variety of ongoing research projects, and is committed to achieving a high level of academic excellence in research, graduate, and undergraduate education. Today, we confront complex issues such as concern over government policies on healthcare and education, security against possible terrorism, ethnic conflict abroad, support for economic development overseas, and the implications of globalization, to name but a few. With a history spanning more than a century, the department combines tradition and innovation to understand these challenging issues through its award winning research and outstanding undergraduate and graduate teaching. Through our graduate program, our tremendous faculty trains the experts of tomorrow. Our undergraduate programs — among the most popular in the university — provide students with the knowledge and skills to come to grips with critical issues. We believe these skills enable our students to be both more active participants as citizens, as well as being better informed. The faculty’s research—rich in substance and methodologically diverse—makes a significant contribution to disciplinary development and political knowledge. As it embarks on its second century, the department is undergoing an unprecedented period of expansion, ensuring that it will continue to meet the challenges of a changing discipline and world.
