Program Description

The Department of Political Sciences, in the Faculty of Humanities, presents under- and postgraduate degree packages and modules in International Relations and Political Science up to a doctoral level. The Department also presents degree packages up to a doctoral level in, and forms part of, the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences.

Political Science was introduced in 1912 (in combination with other subjects) and became a separate major in 1922. International Politics (renamed International relations in 2001) was introduced as a two-year major in 1969 and as a three-year major in 1997. Two research institutions, the Institute for Strategic Studies (ISSUP), established in 1974 and the Centre for International Political Studies (CIPS), established in 1999, have close links with the Department and staff members of the Department are actively involved in the research activities of these institutions.

Considering the aforesaid, the teaching and research expertise and experience of the University of Pretoria in the field of political studies, in particular that of the Department of Political Sciences, date back 80 years, are well established and have received national and international recognition.
